BREAKING: WAR ERUPTS IN MOZAMBIQUE
Mozambique Plunged into Chaos as Post-Election Protests Turn Violent
Mozambique is reeling from the aftermath of violent post-election protests that have left at least 11 people dead and dozens injured. The protests erupted on October 24 and 25, following the announcement of the election results, which saw the ruling party Frente de Libertação de Moçambique (FRELIMO) declared the winner.
Eyewitnesses describe scenes of chaos and brutality as security forces used live bullets and tear gas to disperse protesters. In the city of Chimoio, police shot and killed at least three people, while in Nampula city, witnesses reported seeing police kill at least one person and injure several others.
The use of excessive force by security forces has been widely condemned by human rights groups. “The Mozambique security forces’ violent crackdown on protesters has severely increased political tensions following the country’s elections,” said Allan Ngari, Africa advocacy director at Human Rights Watch.
The protests were sparked by allegations of widespread irregularities and restrictions on the rights to freedom of expression and assembly. The opposition party has claimed that the election results were rigged, and has called for an independent investigation.
As the situation in Mozambique continues to deteriorate, there are growing concerns about the impact on the country’s fragile democracy. The international community is calling for calm and restraint, and for the Mozambican authorities to respect the rights of protesters and to investigate the use of excessive force.
