Chamisa Rejects Fake News

Former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa has pushed back against allegations that he has “sold out the struggle for democracy”, describing the claims as part of a “propaganda campaign of fake news”.

The accusations from some opposition activists stem from Chamisa’s perceived lack of strong public engagement against the controversial Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment Bill Number 3, which is currently before Parliament.

The Bill proposes significant constitutional changes, including extending the presidential and parliamentary term from five to seven years and shifting the method of electing the President from a direct popular vote to an indirect system through Members of Parliament.

Chamisa rejected the claims in a brief statement, insisting that the allegations are politically motivated.

“Disturbing to note a propaganda campaign of fake news, fabricated falsehoods and contrived lies being sponsored by the oppressors,” he said.

He added that the issue goes beyond party politics, describing it as a national matter concerning the future of the country.

“This is no longer about political parties but about ZIMBABWE,” he said.

The debate comes amid rising concern among opposition figures and constitutional law experts who argue that the proposed amendments may require a referendum under Section 328 of the Constitution, particularly where changes affect governance structures and citizens’ rights.

However, the government and the ruling ZANU PF party maintain that a referendum is not legally required for the current amendments, insisting that the parliamentary process is sufficient.
